Social Committee

The Social committee is alive and active. Twenty members attended a meeting after WAGS last week. Lots of enthusiasm & ideas were expressed.

A great start with “What is Happening” playing live each Thursday night. Discussion ranged from “Troppo News” printed version (as published long ago), Beach Volleyball, Theme nights, Monthly “meet new members” night, Family orientated events, information evenings (eg weather, navigation).

The next meeting is to be held Wednesday 7 th May 1800, after WAGS.

Cruising

Do you love to sail but are not into competitive yacht racing? Our yacht division is seeking a Cruising Division Fleet Captain. Not a difficult job. Just coordinate a few yachts and sailors to head in a similar direction for lots of fun. You don’t need to own a yacht. Call Graeme for details 0409 342 899

 Yacht Sailing

Since the full-on weeks over Easter and the Centenary celebrations, the Yachts have sailed a Sunday buoy race on 13 April. Three div 1 yachts attended and seven div 2 boats contested the heavy conditions with Innocent Bystander withdrawing due to sail damage. Gusts of 34 knots were reported. Southern Hustler took handicap honours in Div 1 and Flashback was first in Div 2.

Next race will be conducted on Sat 26 April (Anzac Weekend). An informal briefing will be conducted in CYC at 1800 hrs on Thurs 24 April. Look for instructions on the sailing calendar.

Far North Qld Sailing Meeting

On Saturday 19 April, delegates from clubs in the region (Whitsundays to Cooktown) met in Cardwell to further develop a regional plan for future sailing and management of the considerable resources deployed in the region.

Safety Vessels and Race Management

It has become clear that to advance the sport of sailing, we need support crew to man the safety vessels and be prepared to lay and retrieve buoys for racing. Troy is collecting names of people interested in doing the Race management course. They may also be able to attain their

Recreational Ship Masters licence (Speed Boat Licence) at the same time. Phone the office to leave your name, or have someone you know phone the office to leave their name for this course 4031 2750.

Currently Peter Robinson and Geoff Read are assisting with these tasks. It will make it easier if more people can assist with these important tasks.

Cheers GORDO

THE BELL ROPE

Once upon a time, there was a bell rope attached to the bell over the CYC bar- recently it disappeared for a while (bell rope- what bell rope??)

There is a story behind this caper that involves some skullduggery & here ‘tis.

A long time ago, there was a man who toiled and toiled to create a beautiful bell rope which he presented to the Commodore to allow him to call the faithful and embellish upon them a few drops of good mead at his discretion.

Anyhow, around the time of the Centenary celebrations at the CYC, when there was much frivolity and the mead had been replaced by rum, a couple of members who wish to remain anonymous- so we’ll call them Andy and Matt to protect their identities- were in amongst the throng and having a fine old time of it. Andy was at the bar and decided that the bell rope would make a good stabilizer (he probably still had his sea legs on as he was a trifle unsteady) while he persuaded the bar staff that another round of rum would be a great idea. The bell rope, after having faithfully served generations of philanthropists through the years, could not handle its new role as an Andy prop and promptly disengaged itself from its place below the bell.

This simple act prompted an ownership display from Andy, who ran around the club with it with Matt close at his heels to claim it back for the club. ‘How shall we now receive the traditional commodore’s embellishment?’ (or words to that effect) was the cry.

Andy then needed to hide the said rope to maintain his ownership, so in a flash of inspiration, shoved it in his back pocket with the end hanging out(good hiding place!)

Quick as a flash, while he was distracted, Matt retrieved the rope from its clever hiding place, unbeknownst to Andy, and secreted it away.

Andy spent the next few weeks frantically trying to locate the bell rope, as he thought he had lost this important piece of yacht club history.

So now to the present- after a particularly exciting WAGS Wednesday, Matt decided to remind Andy that he needed to reattach the bell rope to its rightful place. Andy, distraught by now, sheepishly admitted he had no idea where it was. ‘Why didn’t you just ask me?’ grinned Matt & retrieved the bell rope from where he had put it on the ledge above the bell. There was much merriment as Andy promised to reattach the bell rope so all will be well.

And the moral of this story is: That which supports the club occasionally needs resupporting.
