Far North Queensland
J24 Championship
04 & 05 Oct 2008

The final race determined the winner by the closest of margins, with second and third determined only on a count back. Tinaroo Young Guns skipper, Peter MacGregor, ably assisted by his crew of Duncan MacGregor, Angus MacGregor, Keiran Mouldey and Dane Mouldey, took the Championship with seven points. A very close second, calculated on a count back, went to Team Blind (CYC), John Jamieson, on eight points, from the Rough Necks (CYC), Troy Walker, also on eight points.
Fifty crew members travelled from various Far Northern centres such as Townsville, Port Douglas, Tinaroo, Mission Beach and of course Cairns, to contest this, the first, Far North Qld J24 Championship in fantastic weather conditions, set on the waters immediately to the north of Marlin Marina.
Many competitors commented on the excellent preparation of the six yachts, which were used in this event. These yachts are a one design class, which then relies on the skill of the crew to attain a place in any race. Fourteen heats were sailed over the two days of the Championship.
Commodore, Warner Furguson, along with race organiser, Rear Commodore, Gordo Raleigh, heartily thanked some thirty volunteers, who helped the organising committee make the event a great success.
This event will now be a feature on the Regional Sailing Calendar and has been hailed as a shot in the arm for NQ Sailing, the peak body in North Qld, who owns the six J24 keel boats used for the event. (NQ Sailing is the umbrella organisation for the eight clubs from Townsville to Port Douglas; all of which have contributed to the aquisition of the yachts, to foster the sport of sailing in the Far North.)
These Yachts are also used to introduce newcomers to sailing through the "Introduction to Sailing Course" run at regular intervals through the year, over a six week period. The next course begins on Saturday 11 October with a sign-on at 1800 on Thursday 09 October. More information by phoning 4031 2750, 4039 1992 or 4036 2996.
The J24 Sailing Program
The Club and its members (full sailing members) now have access to the use of a fleet of competitive J24 class keel yachts. These yachts were purchased through NQ Sailing with the generous assistance of many sponsors who gave cash donations, the CYC giving $10,000.00 in early January of 2005. The J 24's are available for members use at a cost of $75.00 per day and can be used in Race/fleet/Team sailing events and for WAGS and SAGS events. Further enquiries can be made via our email address or telephone the club administrator.

J24 Introductory Sailing
Intermittently, an introductory course in sailing keel boats is offered depending on the availability of volunteer skippers, using the Yachting NQ area-owned J24 fleet, plus a privately owned J24. Only 15 places can be offered in any series, so that personal guidance can be assured.
This offer is available to Cairns residents only. Experienced volunteer skippers supervise and guide applicants into the rudiments of safe sail boat operation. We aim to encourage confidence on which to build further experience gained by crewing regularly through combined club sailing events.
After the six sessions, we can arrange qualified instructors to complete further training needed to gain certification for Boat Safe, Radio or Competent Crew if this is indicated.
Cost currently is a Yachting Queensland affiliated membership at either Cairns Yacht Club or Cairns Cruising Yacht Squadron. These are the clubs that are subsidising use of the yachts. NB. This may vary in the future.
Approximately four or five courses will be conducted yearly and to date all courses have been completely filled well ahead of the start date. However you should register your intent to participate in a later course by registering at the CYC office during working hours or by email on the link below.
